Typically, when a hurricane is going to happen, you have at least a few days of opportunity to prepare your home to safely make it through this natural disaster. These warnings are meant to be taken seriously and not ignored. Here are a few things that you can do to prepare.
Brace The Basement Windows
Most people are mistakenly under the impression that placing taped “x’s” over the windows will properly brace the windows during a hurricane. While this may work during a severe thunderstorm, it is completely useless for hurricane flood protection when floodwaters are pressing up against your basement windows. What you need to do is place plywood over the windows. This will be your best bet to protect yourself from waters smashing the basement windows in.
Sandbag It
If you have access to sandbags, then it is to your benefit to place them around your home. While they may not do much against severe flooding, they can certainly protect against damage during the beginning stages of the storm. There are also large heavy-duty bags that can be filled that are bigger than typical sandbags. These will do a much better job of protection if you are expecting deep floodwaters.
Gather Yard Belongings
One aspect that many people fail to consider for hurricane flood protection is the yard. You need to gather up and lawn chairs, patio furniture, and toys if you have children. All of these can become deadly projectiles during a flood.
